The Portland Hospital is without doubt the most famous children's and maternity facility in the UK. Chosen by many celebrities and royal mothers-to-be during its long history, The Portland is constantly striving to stay at the forefront of maternity and infant care. When the lease on an adjoining building became available, HCA employed us to produce feasibility for the design and construction of a purpose built children's hospital including NICU, SCBU, ambulatory care, a day case unit and a surgical unit.
The Harley Street Clinic CyberKnife Centre
'Part of the internationally renowned private hospital The Harley Street Clinic, the London CyberKnife Centre was the first facility in the UK to offer CyberKnife® treatment.'
rla had the privilege of being appointed by a specialist medical contractor to design and project manage the installation of the first ever CyberKnife® treatment facility in the UK.
Part of the internationally renowned Harley Street Clinic, this CQC Outstanding rated
centre provides state of the art non invasive CyberKnife® laser treatment, offering new hope to patients with inoperable or complex tumours. This project was particularly
complex, as the equipment was to be housed in a disused bank vault, and the installation involved the removal of a significant portion of the ground floor in order to get the
equipment into the premises. In addition to this, gamma knife treatment uses the
Cobalt-60 isotope, which is particularly attractive to terrorist organisations as it the
material used to create a ’dirty’ bomb, a form of nuclear weapon. Additional security measures were designed into the scheme to combat any potential threat posed by
anyone trying to obtain the isotope.
Outpatients & Diagnostic Centre
Golders Green, Lodnon
We were retained by a client who had taken lease on the ground floor and basement of an existing six storey office building. The proposal included a series of consulting rooms, treatment and Ultrasound rooms, seminar space, a separate GP's clinic, a stress test / cardiac suite, a general X-Ray, CT and MRI.
The design team overcame some considerable technical challenges such as negotiation with the Planning Authority and the installation of a power substation. The result is a modern outpatient diagnostic treatment centre discreetly located in a busy urban environment.
Theatres, Wellington Hospital South Building

As the laregst private hospital in the UK, the Wellington offers premier facilities.
This appointment came via a selective fee bid process. The client wanted to increase their surgical services but had no obvious site large enough to accommodate a double theatre suite adjacent to existing theatre services. The site eventually selected was one level of a three-storey car park. The site was undersized and had numerous problems, not least, a leaking roof and a number of open shafts leading to the ground floor.
Four specialists were invited to submit proposals for development of the site to include a standard theatre and an ultra-clean. Our three competitors informed the client that it would be "impossible" to provide these services on the selected site. We submitted a proposal which included a drawn layout and a written assessment. We informed the client that compromises in accommodation would have to be considered if the project was commissioned.
We were appointed, and through a process of detailed analysis and an in depth understanding of the clients' needs we were able to produce a layout which contained all the principal elements of a successful theatre suite. Our willingness to challenge conventional thinking in theatre design led to an exceptionally efficient space layout plan, which has been successfully translated into an efficient theatre suite. Feedback from the client confirms that these theatres are the most successful of any of their numerous facilities.
Maternity Ward, Northampton General Hospital

Projects have included T&O Theatres, IT Centre, Maternity Triage Rooms, Gynecology Extension and Refurbishments, Cheyne Lodge Volunteer Centre, and other ongoing Maintenace.
One of our most notable projects there was a full refurbishment of all 6 Main Operating Theatres. This project was particularly challenging as the theatres were in daily use, and therefore had to be renovated in small parts at a time and to incredible strict time scales. A lot of behind the scenes programming work was necessary to ensure this project ran smoothly to maintain part use of the theatres at all times.
Stoke House Care Home
rla were appointed by Mentaur to undertake the internal refurbishment and external fabric renovations to this Grade II listed care home.
The project provided a number of challenges including extensive stone restoration both internally and externally, negotiating with conservation officers to gain approval and using traditional materials and methods.
Southwick Park School
Designed for Cambian Group PLC, one of the UK's leading providers of specialist services in education and care for young people with an autism spectrum condition (ASC), this is a residential school for young people with autism and associated learning difficulties. Students often have some of the most complex needs and challenging behaviours, and the extension and refusbishment provided a commercial kitchen, additional teaching space, acoustic treatments to the sports hall and new indoor and outdoor play equipment.
Founded in 1584, Uppingham School is a leading British inependent publib boarding school. The Cunstables boarding house was built in 1834 as the local workhouse and used as a hospital during the Great War, before becoming part of the school as a boys’ house in 1926. In more recent years, with coeducation flourishing, rla were employed to design the extension and refurbishment to convert the boarding house, which now home to 52 girls aged 13 to 18.
rla were retained as asset surveyors in 2008 as part of the professional redevelopment team employed by the college to evolve a planning application in a proposal to demolish its ageing building stock and construct a new facility of approximately 27,000m². The £77m project provides a high quality, modern campus fit to educate the county's students in the 21st century.
As the design work progressed, rla were retained as CDM Coordinators for this major redevelopment project incorporating not only the Booth Lane campus but also an existing site on the Lower Mounts, a prominent town centre location.
Student Wellbeing Suite, Mark Rutherford School
rla were appointed to undertake the internal redesign and refurbishment of this existing building to create a wellbeing suite for students to include offices, waiting area, meeting room, and discreet counselling rooms.
Temporary Classrooms, Parklands Primary School
rla were appointed to acquire planning permission to make permanent 5 temporary classrooms on site at the school. After a successful project, rla were proud to give back to the local community by donating books to the library at the school.
rla were appointed by The Cambian Group Plc to provide a "one stop shop" service for the design and contract administration of a new build SEN school for pupils with autism aged between 11 and 16 years.
The project involved the demolition and site clearance of the former White Hart Public House which was severely damaged by fire. The design development work involved a successful, carefully considered Planning Application on a historically controversial site, which has for many years been an eyesore to the local community. rla designed the entire school, with facilities including specialist classrooms, offices, sensory rooms, and secure play spaces. Every aspect of the design was meticulously planned with the children's requirements in mind, so the finished product was able to provide the children with the most enriching educational experience possible, whilst catering to their individual needs.
The completed project has reinforced our position as the preferred partner for this clients expansion plans and we look forward to developing further sites for them.
Modern Residential Conversion
The clients acquired a disused conservative club and retained rla to convert the building to a residential property. The result was a total transformation into a unique family home designed for their every need, even including a dog washing room for their beloved mountain dog.
Whilst complying with obscure planning and covenant restrictions, we opened up the interior space, built a top floor lantern to get light into the deep plan of the building, and specified modern material such as powder coated steel and cedar cladding for the exterior.
New Detached Dwelling
rla were approached by a client who was looking to buy a piece of land that was part of the rear garden of a listed building in Cambridgeshire. Working in harmony with the nature of the site, we designed an eco-friendly family home, with natural materials at the heart of the concept. We later acquired planning permission.
New Build Residential
rla designed a handful of modern 5 bedroom residential properties for a new housing development in Northamptonshire. These properties had a focus on unique design, high quality materials and luxurious features.
Compton House Student Apartments
Compton House is a multi-tenanted, mixed-use building which occupies a prominent position in Northampton’s main pedestrianised shopping artery. With BBC Radio Northampton operating from the ground floor, rla took on the redesign project to redevelop the upper floors for student accommodation to welcome students at the modern Northampton University.
Georgian Town House Extension & Renovation
This large Georgian town house in central Cambridge benefitted from our full Design and Build service with our trusted contractors. rla created a bespoke design to fit the clients unique requirements, even featuring a Rasul.
Ground Floor Renovation
This high end residential project included an out building conversion to create a bar space perfect for entertaining, and a spa area with an indoor hot tub recessed into the floor. Like most of our residential clients, this client opted for rla to be responsible for the entire project, and we worked alongside our trusted contractors to make the clients dreams a reality. Since undertaking this project, we have had many clients from the same village based on the testimonials and recommendations we received.

The Old Spring Pub
The Old Spring is a homely pub nestled in the De Freville area of Cambridge, just a short walk from the River Cam and its many boatyards. rla got listed building consent to make minor exterior alterations, redesign car park and entrance, and designed a new outdoor dining area.
After the success of the first project, rla were called on again to rectify a planning issue. After a third-party company were employed to install outdoor dining domes, their planning application was refused - the client lost trust in the company and called on rla to help. As experts in planning law, rla were trusted to submit a new planning application, which was passed with no issues.
One of the most challenging projects to date, rla designed a crematorium to be added to an existing cemetary building. With complex planning laws to navigate, rla were able to appeal and overturn the planning committee's decision to refusethe planning. After this huge win, the client asked rla to manage the whole project, using our trusted contractors.
Commercial Office and Retail Space
rla were appointed to undertake the internal redesign and refurbishment of this existing building to provide commercial office accomodation within the upper floors, whilst providing a bespoke retail space at street level.
Golf Clubhouse Refurbishment
rla designed a complete refurbishment of the clubhouse function rooms and associated kitchen bars and serving area.
